The market architecture
A bond market is more than a collection of yields. It combines issuers, dealers, investors, trading venues, settlement infrastructure and collateral arrangements. In New Zealand, these layers determine how efficiently capital can move between primary issuance and secondary trading.
The sovereign benchmark curve
Government securities often establish reference rates across maturities. Those benchmarks can influence swaps, corporate borrowing, mortgages and valuation even when the sovereign itself is not the object of analysis. Benchmark status depends on liquidity and issuance practice as much as on maturity labels.
Primary issuance model
Regular calendars, reopenings, syndications and auction formats shape the supply of duration. The design of issuance programmes can concentrate liquidity into benchmark lines or distribute it across a wider set of securities.
Secondary-market liquidity
Turnover is rarely uniform across the curve. On-the-run or recently issued securities can trade differently from older lines. Dealer balance sheets, electronic trading and repo availability all influence the depth visible to investors.
Investor base
Banks, insurers, pension funds, households, central banks and foreign investors bring different duration and liquidity preferences. Their relative importance can shape demand for long bonds, linkers and short-term government paper.
Inflation protection and special segments
Where inflation-linked or other specialised sovereign instruments exist, they add a separate price-discovery channel. Their usefulness depends on index methodology, liquidity and the investor base rather than simply on issuance volume.
Settlement, repo and collateral
A security’s market role depends partly on how easily it can be transferred and financed. Settlement systems, central counterparties and collateral frameworks connect the cash bond market to the wider financial system.
