RIX-RTGS belongs to the infrastructure layer that converts financial instructions into completed obligations. The key analytical question is functional: whether the system clears, settles, transfers, records or coordinates cash, securities or foreign exchange.
The transaction chain
A trade can pass through execution, confirmation, clearing, funding and settlement before obligations are final. Different infrastructures occupy different points in that chain, and confusing those roles can obscure where liquidity or operational risk actually sits.
Settlement asset and finality
Final settlement can occur in central-bank money, commercial-bank money or through securities-account movements depending on the system. The legal and operational point of finality matters because it determines when an obligation can no longer be unwound under normal rules.
Liquidity mechanics
Participants may need intraday liquidity, collateral or prefunding to complete settlement. These requirements connect infrastructure directly to money markets and central-bank facilities, especially during periods of high payment volume or market stress.
Participation and access
Direct participation rules determine which institutions connect to the core system and which access it indirectly through intermediaries. That structure can concentrate operational dependencies even when end users are globally distributed.
Operating windows and time zones
Cut-off times and operating hours are part of market structure. Cross-border transactions must bridge systems that do not always operate simultaneously, creating timing and liquidity considerations that become especially visible during stressed sessions.
Connections to adjacent rails
RIX-RTGS should be analysed together with the clearing, custody, correspondent-banking and settlement systems around it. Financial infrastructure behaves as a network, not as isolated utilities.
