Meta has spent much of its history as an exceptionally cash-generative digital platform. Advertising revenues from Facebook and Instagram gave the company the ability to fund expansion internally, maintain a strong balance sheet and operate with comparatively little dependence on external financing. Artificial intelligence is beginning to make that model more capital intensive.
The company is committing heavily to data centers, servers, networking equipment and advanced computing infrastructure in order to support recommendation systems, generative AI products and increasingly sophisticated models. These investments may strengthen Meta’s long-term competitive position, but they also increase the amount of capital that must be committed before returns are fully visible. For bond investors, this raises a different set of questions from those faced by shareholders. The issue is not simply whether AI succeeds, but how sustained investment affects free cash flow, debt capacity and the company’s cost of capital.
Meta’s core advertising businesses remain highly scalable, but the infrastructure needed to support modern AI systems is not. Large models require substantial computing power, and that means additional data-center capacity, specialized chips, cooling systems, networking infrastructure and access to reliable electricity. The financial profile of the company is therefore becoming increasingly shaped by physical assets.
This shift matters because capital expenditure absorbs cash immediately while the economic benefits may emerge over several years. A company can report strong operating performance while free cash flow comes under pressure simply because investment accelerates. For credit investors, understanding that distinction is essential. Lower free cash flow caused by deliberate investment is fundamentally different from lower cash flow caused by deteriorating business conditions, but both can affect financial flexibility.
Meta’s ability to finance these investments internally remains a major strength. However, the larger and more persistent the AI build-out becomes, the more relevant debt markets become as an additional source of funding.
Meta’s cost of capital influences how aggressively it can invest and how investors evaluate the returns generated by those investments. The company’s equity cost reflects the return demanded by shareholders, while its debt cost is influenced by Treasury yields and the credit spread investors require to hold Meta bonds. When benchmark yields are low, long-term infrastructure projects become easier to justify because the financing hurdle is lower. When rates rise, the required return on new investments increases. This does not mean Meta will stop spending simply because Treasury yields move higher. The company has substantial financial resources and strategic reasons to maintain AI investment. But higher financing costs can influence how management evaluates marginal projects and how much external capital is used.
The cost of capital therefore becomes a bridge between the bond market and Meta’s AI strategy. Even a company with substantial cash reserves operates within a financial system where the risk-free rate affects investment decisions, valuations and the attractiveness of debt financing.
Meta’s borrowing should not automatically be interpreted as financial weakness. Strong companies often issue debt because it provides flexibility. Long-term financing can preserve cash, spread funding across maturities and help align the financing of long-lived infrastructure with the life of the underlying assets and this becomes particularly relevant when capital expenditure rises at the same time as management continues to pursue other priorities such as acquisitions, share repurchases or maintaining a liquidity buffer. Debt can provide an additional layer of optionality without forcing the company to reduce investment or rely entirely on current cash generation.
For bond investors, Meta is therefore an example of how debt can shift from being largely unnecessary to becoming strategically useful as a business grows more capital intensive. The key question is not whether the company borrows, but whether leverage remains conservative relative to cash flow and whether the proceeds support investments capable of generating sustainable returns.
The most important indicators are the relationship between capital expenditure, operating cash flow, free cash flow and net debt. If capital expenditure rises sharply while operating cash flow remains strong, the company may still maintain substantial credit protection. If investment grows faster than cash generation for an extended period, the financing structure becomes more relevant.
Credit spreads also deserve attention. Tight spreads indicate that investors continue to view Meta as a strong borrower, while widening spreads can signal concerns about leverage, investment intensity or the broader economic environment. Treasury yields matter separately because they determine the base cost of corporate borrowing even when the company’s own credit quality remains stable.
Another important factor is the return Meta eventually earns on its AI infrastructure. Large spending programs are easier for bondholders to tolerate when they strengthen revenue growth, margins or competitive position. Persistent spending with weak economic returns would gradually become more relevant to credit risk.
